During an episode of sleep apnea, a person is unable to breathe sufficiently due to a narrowing of the airway, which causes them to snore loudly and take long breaks in between breaths. The severity is often established using the apnoea/hypopnoea index (AHI which is the number of apnoeas plus the number of hypopnoeas aging per hour of sleep - (hypopnoea being reduction in airflow).
